Orthodox Christian Spiritual Life and Works of Mercy

"Orthodox Christian compassionate engagement with the world, however, is never reduced to a mere form of social activism. It is always a liturgy after the Liturgy: as we offer ourselves and the world to Christ and the Trinity in prayer and worship during the Liturgy, we offer ourselves and the world to Christ and the Trinity through our compassionate engagement with the world after the Liturgy.

Our engagement with the world undertaken for the sake of the world is thus offered to Christ, and for the sake of Christ, in response to and in thanksgiving for the mercy and compassion he bestows on us. In consequence, we are to commit ourselves to a “continuous liberation from the powers of the evil that are working inside us” and we are to engage with “efforts aimed at liberating human persons from all demonic structures of injustice, exploitation, agony, loneliness, and at creating real communion of persons in love.”
